Currently in Elk Grove there are only about a dozen houses, a general store and the Elk Grove Hotel which is kept by J. W. Perry. The Hotel is a three story building that used to be run by the Hess family.

Elk Grove was started in 1823 when James Rogers and Mr. Wilson first explored it. It was called Elk Lick Settlement. The next year a road was built from the Susquehanna and Tioga turnpike to the settlement. The Rogers and Wlisons then moved in. In 1826 John Keeler, John Hiddleson, Edmund Pennington, John R. Pennington, Christopher Speary, Samuel Speary, John Hunter and their families moved in along with a few others. When John Hiddleson arrived he built and operated a sawmill. The settlers built a schoolhouse in 1832 at the intersection of the Muncy Road and the first road built across North Mountain.

The Pentecost Lumber Company built a railroad to connect the Bloomsburg and Sullivan road at Central to Elk Grove. In 1912 the company was absorbed by the Central Pennsylvania Company and the tracks were torn up. The small town once again became a run down collection of buildings.

Today, Elk Grove is dotted with summer cottages and hunting lodges. Nestled near Gamelands 13 and along scenic West Branch of Fishing Creek, one can see how recreation and relaxation are so popular here.
