What is a watershed?

A watershed is an area of land that drains into one particular waterway. Water enters a watershed system via precipitation (rain and snow). This water runs over the land of the watershed basin and flows into the streams. The water also percolates through the soil and enters the groundwater. As a single water drop takes its journey through the watershed, it picks up materials it comes in contact with, whether it be important nutrients and minerals or harmful pollutants.
